Yondering weekly podcast recommendation!
Mastercurator? We’re still loooking for a good title for this idea.
I have a reputation, in my household, for being the person who begins probably 40 percent of my sentences with “So I listened to this podcast, and…”.
What can I say? The chainstitch machines are very loud, which means we often want to have our noise-cancelling headphones in our ears, and that allows for a LOT of time to listen to things. Hours and hours of things. Sometimes music, yes- but there are a lot of stitching hours in a day, and multiply that by a full work week and…. well, it’s a lot of podcasts.
The result of all this podcast listening is a very annoying ability to START trying to explain some theory or procedure or method or story- fumble, butcher the concept, backtrack, try again, fail.
But the one thing I feel I can competently follow through on is, if not correctly encapsulate the message of a podcast, at least do a bit of light curating for you all, given that most of you likely don’t have the bandwidth to process the sheer volume of audible content that I do. I DO IT FOR THE PEOPLE.
So, drumroll please! Welcome to your Yondering weekly podcast recommendation*.
I’ll *try* to keep these somewhat on-topic, in regards to the themes explored in previous missives, and that are at least loosely connected to the material we’re exploring leading up to the 10 year anniversary show at Prizer Gallery in November.
Themes to include: Mythology, Junian archetypes, Western Wear, Individuation, Animism, Trickster shenanigans, Grief, Art making, and, yes maybe embroidery and garment construction!
We’ll kick things off first, however, with what has become my favorite new-to-me podcast, The Emerald. If it’s new to you, as well, I highly recommend digging in and listening to all of them, but I’ll start you off with the one that feels most closely aligned with everything I’ve been thinking about regarding adolescence and how that shows up looking culturally a lot like, well, a cowboy.
The podcast is about mythology, and animism, and trance and ritual. It’s not just a guy talking in your ear- it’s music and poetry, and woven in are deep history and storytelling and wisdom transmissions.
This one claims to be about AI, which normally would kind of turn me off. I encourage you to listen anyway if that’s also you. Because it’s also sort of about cowboy culture.
If you do listen, please come back and let me know what you thought! I’m curious what this brings up for all of us as we navigate this time of trying to integrate technology as it attempts to hijack our systems of metabolization.
*I tried to get my crew to come up with a funny title for a weekly podcast recommendation missive, but the best they’re come up with so far is Mastercurator. If you think of anything better, leave a comment! Also thank you, team. I love you. DO BETTER. jk.
